Brown-Eyed Girl Photography bio picture

I wish....

.....to capture memories for you or your family that you'll treasure for a lifetime.  I specialize in on-location maternity, infant, child, family & high school senior portrait photography using only Canon equipment along with natural light which, to me, provides the most beautiful images.  I am also available for freelance work and have recently provided images for Schertz Magazine including several cover shots.  I primarily serve the Texas communities of Schertz, Cibolo, Universal City, Garden Ridge, San Antonio and surrounding areas and look forward to hearing from you soon!

Blessings, Jana

I am....

....a wife & mother of 3 boys who is hopelessly addicted to reality tv, 80s music (particularly Duran Duran), Dr. Pepper and shopping for antiques, bargains & shoes (my closet is proof of this fact).  I'm just a regular, somewhat crafty gal who longs to take beautiful photographs, make beautiful things and surround myself with them.  Nothing makes me happier than making others happy and providing beautiful portraits for clients is just about the best thing I can think of so I hope you'll allow me the chance to do the same for you.  Take a look through my blog & at my website and if you like what you see, send me a note and comment on my blog if you'd like.  I'd love to hear from you!

Pretty Girl

A few weeks ago I was asked to do headshots for a young girl who is interested in persuing acting & such and she needed some headshots for her portfolio.  Her mom wanted them to be very relaxed & outdoorsy so I met them at their home and we had fun taking pretty photos in their backyard.  I had NO idea she was going to wear pink and had just happened to bring along my trusty pink wooden chair and a pretty old quilt I scored recently at a local craft mall and they worked just perfectly for some of the shots!  Of course I felt the need to emphasize her baby blues & lovely smile so I hope the photos bring her luck because she is sure a talented lovely girl, inside & out.

I’m also THRILLED to announce that I’m hoping to sign a lease on studio space this week so I will also be able to provide indoor studio natural light photography along with my usual on-location photography.  The space is big & bright with 2 large windows and I can’t wait to move in and make it my own!  I promise to post pics soon as soon as I’m able to so you can see it for yourself to keep checking back!

Baby Ethan Sneak Peek! {Schertz newborn photography}

Mama Holly has been waiting patiently so I wanted to post a few sneak peeks of her precious long-awaited bundle of joy, you might remember her maternity session.  I went to their beautiful home for some photos of Baby Ethan at 11 days old because his great-grandfather who is 90 years young was visiting from New York and they were both as charming as can be!  Little guy didn’t want to sleep but that’s ok, we made the best of it since he was very relaxed & patient with us as we changed his outfits & moved him around.  What a little trooper!  Congrats Holly & Brad, your little man is simply precious…..

Sneak Peek for the Garza Family {San Antonio Family Photographer}

I’m excited that business is back up & running after the holiday hiatus.  The break was nice but it’s also been wonderful to get back in the groove and shoot some fun sessions with some awesome people and the Garza family was no exception!  Tamanya found me online, she lives in Philadelphia, but the rest of her family is here in Texas.  She was going to be in San Antonio for 5 days and really wanted to have family portraits taken since it’d been 10 yrs. since they’d had a family photo taken.  With it being January and all I was a bit nervous & praying that the weather would cooperate with us since we only had a few days to work with but gratefully the day we were scheduled to meet the sun was shining & the temps nice & warm so we were blessed indeed!  They wanted a natural relaxed setting so we met at the park and had a fun afternoon walking around & getting to know each other so I wanted to post a few sneak peeks for them.  Enjoy & thank you!

Business is picking up and will be back in full swing soon as the weather here in South Texas is already warming up and spring flowers will be sprouting before we know it so if you’re considering booking a session either for your high school senior, your family or your children now is the time to book & lock in the date of your choice!  With the spring comes busy baseball season for our family so my weekend dates will be limited due to baseball tournaments out of town and I know that it’s easiest for many familes to shoot on the weekend because of work and all so contact me soon if you’re interested.  You can contact me here through my blog or you can also email me directly at browneyedgirlphotography@yahoo.com.  Hope to hear from you soon!

Baby Love {Schertz newborn photography}

As Melanie stated in the movie Gone with the Wind, “The best days are ones when babies are born” and isn’t that the truth!  I just got the blessed news that a friend & client just delivered her first baby, a baby boy named Ethan and I couldn’t be happier for them!!  You might remember her here.  Congrats Brad & Holly, I’m SO thrilled for you & can’t wait to meet your long-awaited bundle of joy.  I also had the pleasure of shooting a newborn session for another client, Paula, back in December.  I went to their house in Boerne and even though the little guy was just a couple of weeks old he didn’t want to miss out on the party and didn’t sleep a wink for us despite all of our best efforts!  Congrats to you too, George & Paula!

Monday Musings

First of all…….Happy New Year!  Thanks for stopping by and checking in to see what’s going on here at Brown-Eyed Girl.  The holidays have come & gone, all traces of Christmas have vanished from my home, my family has left, hubby is back to work and the kiddos headed back to school today and it’s a new year with endless new possibilities so my mind is racing with all of the resolutions I want/need to make, things I want to do & accomplish personally, physically & professionally, changes to myself & my business that I want to make this year, improvements I want to make to our home, etc. and it’s all just a bit…….overwhelming actually.  I feel as if it’s impossible to focus on any one thing in particular so I chose to focus on 2 tasks that I knew I could finish today……laundry & blogging!  Rather than attempting to focus on one subject or session which seems utterly impossible at the moment, you get a compilation of random musings on this fine chilly monday……..

  • It’s only  been a few months since I’ve seen Duran Duran in concert but I’m already itching to see them again (badly!)
  • I just bought myself a new upgraded flash for my camera, necessary but not very exciting for me unfortunately
  • I’m pretty excited about the new seasons of American Idol, Bachelor & Project Runway
  • I just can’t seem to get rid of magazines for some reason & have stacks of them……everywhere
  • My Yorkie has about a dozen different names that we all call her, poor thing probably feels like Sybil
  • When I was little all I knew was that I wanted to be a mommy & be successful
  • I never really used to care for my name nor the fact that I’m from Oklahoma but now I embrace both wholeheartedly
  • I love Texas but really believe that I could move to southern California & feel very  much at home almost immediately
  • It’s only early January and I’m already growing tired of this cold weather, I crave warm sunshine
  • 2010 is all about updating my home, new paint & carpets are on the horizon
  • My neighbors showed me how to appreciate & enjoy really good red wine & I’m so happy that they did
  • I feel good that I successfully helped my mom get through her first holiday season without my dad
  • But I’ve been focusing a bit too much on everyone else & now I think it’s time to focus on me for a while, my needs & wants
  • I feel my home is VERY organized yet my business paperwork & such??  Notsomuch
  • I stink at making goals yet understand that if we don’t make them, we won’t know if we accomplished them
  • I look forward to nurturing current friendships & making many more new ones in the new year
  • I like looking at this photo I took at the San Antonio Missions because it makes me feel WARM……..

Happy New Year!!

Hope that all of you had a wonderful, safe & blessed holiday season and are looking foward to the new year with as much anticipation as I am.  We had a nice relaxing Christmas with my mom & brother here at the house.  Everyone loved their gifts, candlelight church service on Christmas eve was lovely, got to hang with friends that evening, Christmas dinner turned out yummy and I spent nearly 2 days in my jammies so I’d say that’s an overall success!  As much as I enjoy this time of year, for some reason when the hubby & my family headed out early on sunday morning I decided it was time to take all of the Christmas decor down when I normally am the gal who’s FINALLY taking her tree down in January.  I don’t know……I just seemed to have the motivation & energy to do it so down it came.  It took me two full days of working but it’s done and put away nicely all tucked away for next year which is a really good feeling.  I don’t know if it was because this was our first Christmas without Dad or what, but I was just ready for it to be DONE and now I’m eagerly anticipating to see what 2010 will hold for me personally & professionally.  If it’s anything like what 2009 was, it’ll be exciting for sure!

The next week or so I’ll be going back & posting sessions from ‘09, the first of which is one I did with my pastor & his family back in August.  They gave prints from their session as Christmas presents so I needed to keep their secret with them till now.  We did the session at their river-side property which is so lovely.  It was a warm summer day but they were troopers & did great and thankfully their print gifts were a hit!

Thank you Deahl family for allowing me to capture memories for you & your family!

We’ll be heading up to Dallas soon to cheer on Oklahoma State in the Cotton Bowl on the 2nd so if I don’t post again before then, I pray all of you have a safe & FUN New Years Eve!  Adios 2009, you’ve been a year of extreme highs & the lowest of lows but all in all you were a good one so thank you.

‘Tis the season!!

We finally had a pretty sunny day a few days ago so I did something I’d not really done before…….I just walked around the house and took pics.  I try to mix up my holiday decor and do things differently every year but I really liked the way my Christmas decor turned out last year and I really regretted not taking photos of the house  because my memory stinks frankly and I couldn’t remember exactly what I’d done!  Well, thankfully I won’t have that problem next year now that I have photos for posterity’s sake.

I collect snowmen and have for years and years

I have 5 Christmas trees in my house, is that just plain ridiculous??!

I really love red, can you tell?!

My Three Sons

Well, I had every intention of taking some house pics to share with you to show all the hard work Mom and I have put into our Christmas decor this season but alas, we’ve still had literally no sunshine nor even a hint of bright skies to help illuminate my dark house so I can take pics so instead I’ll post some pics of my boys.  On late sunday afternoon after I returned home from a newborn session in Boerne, I nagged my reluctant sons into submission and we headed out to the greenbelt behind our house for a few quickie family holiday pics so I wouldn’t be the only lame photographer out there who isn’t sending out a pic of her OWN family and here are the results.  Not perfect but hey, it’s US, real life and all.  I’d rather look back at these photographs in 20 yrs. and think, “Yep, that was us back then.  No fake smiles nor ties & snazzy clothes in a pretty plastic setting……our outfits don’t really match and yea, the logos on their shirts are slightly distracting but those are my boys!”  I also have my mom to thank for the motivation to get some pics taken.  Since Dad’s death she’s been in the process of changing things up around her house to make things different yet the same, not intending to erase Dad’s memory yet needing a change so things aren’t exactly the same since he was there with her.  I totally get it and support her 100% so I was more than happy to oblige when she asked for new photos of her grandsons to line to hallways of her home.

Here she is, Grandma & her only grandchildren:

Our oldest son, Ryan…….new driver, trumpet player, quirky sense of humor, the most like my husband, intelligent:

12

Our middle son, Dylan……..sensitive, physically strong, the clown of the group, quiet most of the time, the most like me:

10

Our youngest son, Brendan……..athletic, popular with the girls, mixture of his older brothers, momma’s boy (in a good way!):

13

My mom was brave enough to jump behind the lens and snap a few shots of us and this is literally the ONLY one that turned out but I’m so grateful it did as if provided us an image for our Christmas cards, woot for that!  Yea, again, it’s not perfect and I look extremely short & squatty in my flat Ugg boots next to my tall, lanky husband but what can ya do?

1

Well, now you know a bit more about me and my family…….probably more than you bargained for but this is us.  Imperfect, humble, grateful, saved, & loved.

Current Mood:  FESTIVE!!

I’ve been in the mood to blog more, more than I currently do but not as much as I USED to.  Just a few years ago I’d blog nearly everyday and ramble on incessantly about such random ordinary “stuff”……I still can’t  believe people besides me actually read it!  Anyway, I really want to turn this blog into more than just a photography blog although I’m sure there might be folks out there who tune in exclusively to see photography and might not care less about what I’m actually doing or what projects I’m working on around my house but hopefully there are a *few* of you out there who do care and might not mind if I ramble on for a while every now & again so I hope you’ll indulge me!  Don’t worry, I’m still going to post plenty of photos although holiday sessions are winding down.  I’m sure I’ll find something to snap photos of to share, I am needing to take pics of my house all decorated up like crazy for Christmas but I’ve been waiting for a nice sunny to do so since my house is naturally dark but we haven’t seen much sun around these parts lately unfortunately.  ONE of these days.

December 29, 2009 - 8:39 am Katie - Jana, I am loving your blog...thank you for allowing us a peek into your life...your photography is amazing and to know the person creating the photos adds to how special the memories are! So keep up the "ramblings" ;-) AND BTW, I too LOVE Anthro candles! I just might have to copy your list idea for my blog ramblings ;-) ~Katie

December 17, 2009 - 2:03 pm Holly - LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the outfit! I have track pants on too right now!!! Can't wait to see that new Coach purse! I can't even imagine how gorgeous your house must look for the holidays, so I'm anxiously awaiting pics! Continue to enjoy this festive time & try not to work too hard! Can't wait till our next coffee outing!

December 16, 2009 - 6:53 am Tracy Lynn Suro - Good Morning Jana! I am glad that I took a peek at your blog this morning! You have inspired me to think about my own list of "current" things!! Life has been so busy and I hate when I get to December 26th and realize I hardly noticed all of the JOY around me!! Have a great day!

Today I’m thankful……

  • for this cool dreary weather which has helped get me in the holiday spirit
  • about the fact that I just have a few more small presents to purchase and then my shopping will be finished
  • for a very short-lived head cold that started out bad but ended quickly (although I am still blowing my nose!)
  • that my mom is able to be here with us and not alone for the holidays since this would be her first one alone in 43 yrs without my dad
  • that my business grew leaps & bounds in 2o09, I’m VERY thankful to all who supported me and brought clients my way!
  • for a husband who has been 100% supportive of me and Brown-Eyed Girl.  Not sure what I’d so without him and I don’t intend to find out
  • for 3 healthy sons who always keep me on my toes but also keep joy & pride in my heart (usually!!)
  • for little things like coffee, music, beautiful photography, magazines, reality tv, yummy candles, etc. that bring me joy & relaxation
  • that God has provided good friends & family in my life since I don’t have a biological sister, they are my familia
  • for the new things I’ve learned this year that help make my photography job easier & I look forward to learning much much more next year
  • that I have a vehicle that allows me to come & go as I please, I try never to take these trivial things for granted!
  • for our church family at Crosspoint Fellowship & how they’ve accepted us into their big extended family
  • for friends like you who care enough to stop in & see what I’m up to…..for YOU I’m very very thankful

December 14, 2009 - 11:31 am Kristin - Just swinging by to check up on you and see what you have been up to. I AM IN AWE! Girl, you ooze talent. You are indeed so very blessed.
